GERMANY HAS RED WINE TOO!
When most of us think of wine from Germany, it's white! That's true, due to the cold temperature in Germany, but they do have a small percentage of red wine. I'd like to introduce Dornfelder. Not that it's all that new, but being in the business I realized many people have not heard nor tried this wine. Here's a bit of background on Dornfelder.
Dornfelder is grown in most of the German wine regions, but the majority is produced in the Rheinhessen and Pfalz regions.
The Dornfelder grape is the most successful Greman-bred red grape. It was created in 1955 by August Herold at the Weinsberg Wine School. He crossed the Helfensteiner grape and the Heroldrebe grape to come up with the new grape, which was named after the founder of the Wine School, Imanuel Dornfeld.
This red varietal has been turned into a sweet dinner wine with plum overtones. A dryer version is also produced that pairs ideally with roasts, game and cheese.
Try a bottle and let me know what you think!
