What is Gluhwein?

As soon as the temperature drops, our internal clock tells us it's time for hot chocolate, and, for us traditionalists, it's time for Gluhwein.  I've already had many people ask me if we were going to be carrying Gluhwein again this year.  The answer is yes!

Gluhwein is usually prepared from red wine that is heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, vanilla pods, citrus and sugar.

GluhweinACR

Gluhwein is popular in German-speaking countries and the region of Alsace, France.  It's a traditional beverage offered and drunk on Weihnachtsmarkten, the Christmas market which goes back to the Middle Ages in the German-speaking part of Europe.300px-ChristmasMarketJena

Generally held in the town square, the market sells food, drink (Gluhwein) and seasonal items from open-air stalls, accompanied by singing and dancing.

The oldest Gluhwein tankard is documented in the high noble German and first riesling grower of the world, Count John IV of Katzenelnbogen, around 1420.

Nowadays, it's a traditional drink during winter, especially around Halloween thru Christmas. So, why not join me for a traditional holiday season and try some Gluhwein!
