Saten is Here...Finally!
In our winter edition of the ABC Wine Journal I wrote about some newly discovered wines you must try in 2014. Soon after the journal was mailed, I began receiving questions about two of the wines that were no where to be found. My apologizes to anyone who came into our stores looking for Contadi Castaldi Saten or Bellavista Brut Cuvee. I'll try to be more careful in future publications, but I'm finally thrilled to tell you that both wines are now available at most of our larger stores or through our website.
The wine that seems to have generated the most questions is the Contadi Castaldi Saten. In particular, what is Saten? Saten is a term trademarked solely for the Franciacorta DOCG. The regulations state that Franciacorta Saten must only use white grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco). In addition, it must be bottled with five atmospheres or less of pressure instead of six. Basically a smaller amount of sugar is used in the liqueur de tirage than in a "regular classic" method sparkling wine.
The combination of these elements result in a soft, creamy wine evoking the softness and pleasure of silk. Thus the name, Saten. The Wine Advocate said, "The 2008 Franciacorta Brut Saten is a beautifully sophisticated and compelling sparkling Chardonnay with enriched aromas of toasted almond, melted butter, apricot and honey. The mouthfeel shows similar generosity with soft velvety textured and broad fulfilling length. The ripe fruit and rich, opulent style would stand up to shellfish or smoked salmon canapes."
