Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum cask oak Scotch Ale
The next city and country I am visiting on my beer around the world trek is Edinburgh, Scotland. Here I found a little brewery called Innis and Gunn. I will be sampling their rum cask oak aged Scotch Ale. According to the bottle, it has been aged for 57 days in American and rum infused oak.
Appearance: I am sampling this one chilled in my Maudite tulip glass. A hard pour produces a nice pinkish white, two finger head. The hue is a brilliant, deep ruby red. It is very nice, a very unique color for a beer and probably a corollary of the rum cask aging.
Smell: aromas of burnt brown sugar and baked cinnamon apples shine through. A pleasant flan-like dessert quality comes to mind.
Taste: delicious! The rum aging gives a wonderful vanilla, toffee, and hint of molasses. With each sip evokes a brown breadiness and layers of malt and hop enshrouded by the vanilla oak. What a tasty brew.
Look for this along with Innis and Gunn’s oak aged original Scottish ale at your local ABC.
