Proper Etiquette

It's not always clear to many what to do, or not to do, when attending a wine tasting.  In fact, I've encountered quite a few people who avoid wine tastings altogether because of this. I've had people tell me "only wine snobs go to those things!"  Well...I beg to differ!  Wine tastings that we hold have not only wine, but spirits, mixers, beer, and munchies!  There's something for everyone.

One of the best ways to enjoy yourself and feel comfortable is to attend a tasting with a good friend or a group of friends. (I wouldn't suggest it as a "first" date until I had one under my belt!)

Dress code varies.  Comfortable and casually elegant clothing for a sophisticated tasting, or just nice everyday casual clothes with comfortable shoes.

Don't wear cologne or perfume.  The scent can overwhelm the soft aromas in wine and interfere with your own and others experience.

Remember, a wine tasting is not the same as an evening in a bar.  The environment should be relaxed and conversational.

Tastings should be fun for all, but if you're a "novice wine taster" be careful when you swirl your wine glass so you don't splash the person next to you!  Placing your glass on a flat surface while holding the stem and swirling is a safe and effective way to arouse the wines aromas. (holding the wine glass by the stem, not the bowl, keeps the temperature of the wine cool)

Make use of spittoons or spit-buckets offered. Spitting some or all of the wine you taste will help you to remain alert and enjoy your evening.  Pacing yourself; munching on bread, cheese or finger-food is also helpful.  Remember to eat before you go to a tasting. Normally, a meal is not served; just "munchies."  After all...it is a wine tasting. Drink plenty of water to stave off dehydration and have a Wine-tastingdesignated driver available.

Hope this blog encourages you to attend wine tastings.
