New York Wines for 57th Presidential Inaugural Luncheon

Today, President Barack Obama will take the official oath of office for his second term in a private ceremony.  Because January 20th, Inauguration Day, falls on a Sunday this year, tomorrow the public Inaugural Luncheon in the United States Capitol will take place.

For the first time in modern history the luncheon will feature New York state wines:  Tierce 2010 Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes and Bedell 2009 Merlot from Long Island.

The president will be hosting his cabinet, leaders of congress, supreme court justices, diplomats and other global dignataries who will experience the wines and foods of New York.

Accompanying the wines will be New York seafood, bison, apples, cheeses, honey and maple syrup.

Tierce means three and the back label of the wine explains its name.  "Three vineyards, three winemakers and one wine."

TIERCE WINEMAKERSPeter Bell of Fox Run Vineyards; Johannes Reinhardt of Anthony Road Wine Company; David Whiting of Red Newt Cellars Winery

The Tierce Dry Riesling is a collaborative effort among three top New York winemakers whose vineyards' terroir differ, resulting in 3 great/different Rieslings.  The three gentlemen got together tasting different blends of their Rieslings until they arrived at the best!

The 2009 Bedell Merlot comes from 33 year-old vines, some of the oldest on Long Island.  It was aged 10 months in older French barrels, creating a complex, soft, elegant wine, ideal for accompanying food.

Bedell was the first New York winery to receive a 91 rating by the Wine Spectator for a red wine, (the merlot based blend was called Musse).
