Tenuta Ca’Bolani Pinot Grigio

A recent addition to our wine portfolio has me reminiscing about a visit to Italy I took a few years back.  The new wine is the 2012 Pinot Grigio Superiore from Tenuta Ca’Bolani.  This estate, part of Gianni Zonin’s Casa Vinicola Zonin stable of fine wineries, is located in the heart of the Tre Venezie in the Friuli Aquileia DOC.

Towards the tail end of my excursion, encompassing winery visits in Sicily, Maremma, Chianti and Gambellara, I had the pleasure to meet with Gianni and Ca’Bolani winemaker Marco Rabino over an al fresco lunch on the property.  I was immediately impressed with his zesty Pinot Grigio and its juicy apple, citrus, melon and crushed-stone profile.

Gianni Zonin is a titan of Italian viticulture who transitioned his family’s wine company from humble local origins in the 1960’s into one of the leading wine companies in Europe.  The Ca’Bolani estate was a seminal acquisition for Gianni back in 1970 in what was his family’s first venture outside of the Veneto.  Today, he oversees an operation dedicated to producing premium-quality wines from twelve different estates in Italy and the US.

Ca’Bolani is the one of the biggest wineries in northern Italy with roughly 1300 acres under vine.  The largest parcels are mostly Glera, the grape that makes Prosecco.  Roughly 250 acres are devoted to producing excellent Pinot Grigio with smaller plantings assigned to Sauvignon, Riesling and even a little Muller Thurgau.  Marco also specializes in making a very good Refosco, an interesting local red grape producing wines with low tannin, bright acidity and delightful sour plum fruit; a great match with the thinly sliced veal roast we enjoyed that afternoon.
