Get your wits about witbier
The Belgian Witbier (white beer) is a good style for those who like a light, fruity beer. It usually has a pale yellowish color with an unfiltered cloudiness from wheat sediment left in the bottom of the bottle. The fruitiness comes from the spice consisting sometimes of coriander, orange peel, lemon peel, and other ambrosial ingredients. American brewers like the popularity of this beer and stay true to the style when they add it to their lineup.
I will be sampling World Brews’ “Barrel Trolley Belgian White”. Phrases on the label include “hand crafted” and “America’s best kept secret”.
Appearance: Pours hazy lemonade yellow with a towering, fluffy white head. The wheat sediment dances at the bottom of the bottle where I will leave it.
Smell: a wheat core opens up to lemon oil and coriander with a faint floweriness.
Taste: the body is light, with hints of wheat, fresh grated lemon peel, and cloves in the finish.
Barrel Trolley Belgian White is a nice, light tasting beer with good witbier flavors and easy drinking as a good after dinner beer. One of the most well known American style witbiers is Coors Brewing Company “Blue Moon”. Others you can find at most ABCs (the long list proves the popularity of this style) include: Hoegaarden Original White Ale, Unibroue “Blanche De Chambly”, Leinenkugel “Sunset Wheat”, Samuel Adams “Blackberry Witbier”, Shock Top, Samuel Adams “Imperial White”, Wittekerke (a nice witbeir in a can), Lost Coast “Great White”, Harpoon “UFO White”, and Coronado Brewing Company “Orange Avenue Wit”.
