I Fidy da Fool ... or, what to try this weekend: Oskar Blues Ten Fidy

Ten Fidy

South Florida - December 4

It is a gorgeous chamber of commerce type day in South Florida today.

I ran a 5k race along the downtown waterfront this morning and wanted something special to celebrate with as I channel surfed between the Miami/Oakland game and the Tim Tebow game.

Prior to trying Oskar Blue's Ten Fidy, I knew nothing about the beer besides that it is brewed only a few times a year and supplies are usually limited and sell out quickly.  When I had the opportunity to purchase a case for our Northlake Blvd location, I jumped on it.  On a side note, please do not let the can scare you away from this beer.

There are many great beers packaged in cans. Please do not let the price scare you either.  While $16 for a 4 pack is pricey, it is still a great value.  I love wine, but I cannot get a great bottle of wine and have one glass nightly for a week without the wine turning after a day or two. This is the great value in micro and craft beers; for $10-16 you can get a 4 or 6 pack of great beer and enjoy a drink each night.

Enough with my rambling; let's talk about this beer.  Pouring into the glass, this is the most viscous beer I have ever seen.  It is also pitch black; once in the glass I could not even see through the glass.

Once I had the beer in the glass, the name 'Ten Fidy' made sense to me. This beer pours like motor oil and I assumed the numerical name was a nod to that.  This beer brings every flavor profile that you would expect from a heavy stout. Plenty of roasted cocoa, earthy and malty flavors.  However, there are also some hops in the beer that carry the flavors around your mouth and leave you with a long lingering finish.  This beer would be great with heavy foods and I would recommend it for someone who has experience with dark beers.  I honestly can not figure out if I like it or not; and because it makes me think about it so much, I think I like it.  While it is not a beer I want to drink every night, I can say I am looking forward to finding opportunities to drink the other three cans I have in my fridge.

Keep your glasses half full,

Evan
