Happy New Year! Resolution: taste new beer every week
Happy New Year!
We think a great resolution--always--is to broaden your horizons, whether you're a wine lover or a beer aficionado. To that end, here are a few choices, reviewed by Stephen Schmitt (at our Gandy Blvd store in Tampa).
Cheers! And may 2012 be full of wonderful discoveries!
Unibroue Trois Pistoles- Quebec, Canada
This French-Canadian beauty pours brown with a nice little tan head that recedes to a few continents of bubbles. The aroma is full of figs, stone fruit, rock candy, and a hint of yeast. The taste is similar to the nose with layer upon layer of sweet rock candy, stone fruit, grass, figs, plums, and a hint of yeast. The mouthfeel is a tad light, but overall this is a very enjoyable beer that would be great with a nice meal or by itself on a cool night. It is comparable to some of the best Belgium has to offer. 92/100
Palm- Belgium
This amber delight is what some would consider Belgium's answer to Newcastle. It has a nice amber hue with a fluffy white head. The aroma is of fresh sweet grains and rock candy. The taste is similarly sweet with a nice grain backbone and hints of floral hops, ginger, apples, and honey. This is a little heavy on the sweetness, but still very enjoyable. 89/100
Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Ale- Scotland, UK
Pours garnet with a nice little ring of white head. The beer carries a nice oak aroma followed by molasses, malt, and smoke. Very much reminiscent of a good rum. The body is full and creamy and the flavors are varied. The oak, rum, and beer meld seamlessly. Molasses, figs, light spice, vanilla, red fruit, brown sugar, and some roast all dance together with a crisp, sweet finish. This is a wonderful beer that I look forward to having again. 96/100
