The Ultimate 4th of July Cocktail: the Roman Candle

Independence Day is a time to reflect on our founding fathers’ accomplishments, make hot dogs and have an American beer. Or California wine. Or a red, white and blue cocktail.

For the beer, we suggest something like Sam Adams or a local Florida brew. For wine, a refreshing white sangria with blueberries and strawberries. And for a cocktail? The Roman Candle.

This is not a cocktail to mess around with. The amazing sweet, fruity, tangy smell masks the punch hidden in the layers of this red and blue martini. To make this patriotic libation, combine 3 oz. of berry-flavored vodka (we used Ciroc), ½ oz. cranberry juice and a dash of grenadine in a mixer filled with ice. Shake slightly, and then strain into a martini glass. This is layer No. 1.

The second layer is the ½ oz. of blue curacao, which you must pour slowly and smoothly into the glass. When pouring the blue curacao, be sure to stick closely to the edge of the martini glass so it sinks straight to the bottom and the drink’s end result is layered. Trust us; the first Roman Candle we made turned into an unappetizing inky mess.

All in all, the cocktail was simple to make, though we found it to be a bit strong; three ounces of vodka is more than it seems! If you think you can handle it, go for it. But if you’re looking for something lighter, we suggest pulling back on the berry-flavored vodka, or upping the amount of cranberry juice.

This is the perfect cocktail to make right before the fireworks go off Thursday night. Don’t be surprised if your guests stick around longer to have another.
Happy 4th of July everyone!

Cheers,
