The "world tour of beer" lands in Japan
Beer blogger Adam Shugan is blogging "around the world" in beers.
I am moving further east to Tokyo, Japan, and Asahi Breweries LTD to try Asahi Super Dry. This is a Japanese rice lager. The US export is actually brewed under the supervision of Asahi at Molson Canadian in Toronto but for my world beer tour, I will be in Tokyo.
Appearance: I am pouring it ice cold into my Kirin Ichiban glass. Pours a crystal clear, blanched yellow color with a cool tornadic cluster of bubbles ever-rising to the top of the glass. Bright white head fizzles out quickly.
Smell: light, hints of puffed rice, celery, and stale crackers. Not much going on, but the rice gives it a sweet aroma.
Taste: stale breadsticks, and I am talking about those thin crunchy ones with that hint of sweetness. The finish is bone dry, almost tannic on the tongue. Everything feels diluted.
These light tasting rice and adjunct lagers are perfect with Asian cuisine. No need to be spicy, but the rice flavors blends in with the rice in the dish and doesn’t over power any sauces. Also, this is another Sake bomb staple to add some culture to the mundane beer pong parties, if you're so inclined.
