Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970

Joya de NicaraguaThe hardest thing to do at the IPCPR Trade Show is turning down new cigars. There are so many great cigars and only so much space in a humidor. One of the cigars that I am glad we found room for this year in the Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970.

For the last couple of years we had to say no to this line even though Steve Mungeer and I really love the cigars and wanted to squeeze them in. This year we finally decided to find a way to get some cigars from Nicaragua's oldest cigar factory.

The Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 is an amazing cigar at a very affordable price. The first thing that will grab your attention is that gorgeous Habano Criollo wrapper that is accented by a colorful cigar band. The rest of the tobacco is all Nicaguan Habano making this a wonderful puro and shining example of delicious Nica leaves.

For this review I chose to smoke the Gran Consul which is a 4.7 by 60. It took just over two hours to smoke so make sure you block out some time for this one.

Initial flavors are what one would expect from a Nicaraguan puro, lots of pepper. I also get some heat on the front end in the form of some jalapeño pepper. The spice stays throughout the first third with some nice wood notes.

As the cigar approaches the halfway point there is a nice nuttiness that shines through the pepper spice. Make no mistakes about it, the pepper is always there and if you don't like that in a cigar then this isn't for you. I just want you to understand that from a strength perspective, this cigar is a strong medium at best.

I get a hint of sweetness at the end of this cigar. I perceive the flavor as that of candied nuts, specifically almonds. I don't get any cocoa or coffee, which I don't expect considering the tobacco, so I would classify this one a spice stick.

I think this will be a great cigar for anyone who is a fan of "all things Nicaragua." The price is also great with it coming in under $8. These cigars have already begun to hit stores so you should be able to find one at an ABC near you.
