A world of beers continues in Poland: Zywiec
Beer blogger Adam Shugan is "beering" his way around the world. This week, it's Poland:
I am back across the Atlantic in Zywiec, Poland to assay Poland’s “Number One Premium Beer,” Zywiec Original. It is a Euro pale lager style. The back label has a picture of a brimming glass of Zywiec with a convenient little label that reads “Zywiec” when the beer reaches appropriate drinking temperature, akin to the Coors Light Rockies.
Appearance: I am serving it in my Strongbow nonic. It pours a crystal clear polished gold color with a dense three finger head. It looks well filtered and refreshing.
Smell: Sweet and musty with a telltale European funk. It almost reminds me of agave nectar drizzled over Swiss cheese.
Taste: Malty with a flash of sour apple that has been left out too long. Hop bitterness is nonexistent but keeps the malt in check. Cooked corn is in the background and a fairly long finish.
This is a simple lager. The malt is a little cloying but it would probably go well with poultry or shellfish. It can be found at a few ABCs but can be easily ordered in if so desired.
