The reds, the whites, the brews...

Beerwise, that is. As a history geek, I admit that I go for the ones I can at least pretend are connected to the holiday: Sam Adams, Yuengling. I mean, you have to drink something, right? Out of hundreds of options, unless you're always going for something new, a classic every once in a while isn't a bad idea. And these are beers that go terrifically well with hamburgers on the grill. Plus, there's that whole "named for one of the founding fathers" bit, alongside "oldest brewery."

Want some lemonade to go with your picnic fare? I don't know why, but my grandmother's potato salad is coming to mind. Does celery seed go with lemonade? At any rate, the classic Tom Collins makes a very nice adult version--not too sweet, very refreshing...just watch what you drink because they can sneak up on you. Same with watermelon martinis, another summer favorite. And watermelon is practically a requirement at July 4 picnics.

If wine is on your mind, lower-alcohol wines like Riesling--fantastically food friendly to boot--excel at beating the heat. Need a red? Costarosa Sangue di Giuda is a sweetish red that's perfect for anyone who doesn't care for dry wine; lighter-bodied reds might include Giovanna Tantini's bardolino or Fleur Pinot Noir. Dry rose is also a good choice for picnic fare.

Of course, these are just my suggestions, based on my preferences. So there's a good chance you are wrinkling your nose and looking for something completely different. Your local ABC store team can help you sort through the choices for the perfect reds, whites, brews (or booze. It rhymes.) for a spectacular fourth. Enjoy the fireworks display, and please celebrate responsibly.

Have a great weekend!
