A Few Iberian Additions
Just like a kid on his birthday, I always get a little excited whenever new wines are added to our inventory. For me, it’s kind of like unwrapping a Christmas present when I open a case of something previously unseen. Yes, I’ll admit that sometimes the thrill is tempered when the contents are just another Chardonnay. That is until I taste it and find out it’s usually more than meets the eye. Lately, however, I think the new arrivals are worthy of a little fanfare – especially when they offer some bang for the buck.
ABCFWS just added four solid Iberian values priced under $20. First the new selections from Spain: a Rioja Joven from Bodegas Altanza called Dominio de Heredia Rioja, made from 100% Tempranillo and aged 5 months in wood. This is a juicy, black cherry fruited, drink-me-now red.
We’ve also added a new Priorato, the Onix Classic bottling from Vinacola del Priorat. It’s a 50/50 blend of Garnacha and Carinena (Grenache/Carignan) grown in the famed Llicorella soil (a friable Black Slate) that this region is known for. It’s a complex, full-bodied red with wonderful mineral undertones.
From Portugal, there’s a tasty Alentejo red: Semaphore 7, a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Aragones and Trincadeira. A medium-bodied, ruby hued wine with blueberry and floral notes, it would be great tonight with a grilled lamb chop or barbeque.
How about a little white to pair with paella? We now have a Vinho Verde with some panache: Las Lilas Vinho Verde, made with Loureiro and Treixadura grapes. Clean, crisp and citrusy with just a twinkle of sparkling spritz, this is just the ticket for tapas and fresh seafood.
Starting today, you’ll find these new offerings at your local ABCFWS store location.
